Henry P. Bowditch papers, 1813, 1837, 1851-1961 (inclusive).

The Henry Pickering Bowditch papers, 1813, 1837, 1851-1961, contains mostly letters addressed to Bowditch and some drafts of his outgoing letters; and also a considerable amount of family correspondence. Other papers include Bowditch’s Civil War orders and documents, manuscripts of lectures and essays, 1862 journal of military life at Edisto Island, S.C., Harvard Medical School report of the Committee of Medical Faculty, and memorabilia. Additional correspondence from Harold Bowditch and Jonathan Ingersoll Bowditch is also included in the collection.

Bowditch (Harvard, A.B. 1861; M.D. 1868) studied physiology in Leipzig with Carl Ludwig, whose laboratory was the center for physiological study. He returned to Boston in 1871 and taught physiology at the Harvard Medical School; was appointed as first George Higginson Professor of Physiology; and with the establishment of the first physiological laboratory, brought German technological methods to the U.S. He helped in planning the Harvard Medical School and was active in public affairs, includin...
